What is your favorite kind of fishing? Do you prefer deep sea fishing for rock-fish, ling cod, salmon or halibut? Surf fishing or do your prefer river fishing for salmon or trout – or Redtail perch or bat rays from the bay? Or how about fishing on a quiet lagoon for cutthroat trout? You've got it all in Humboldt County fishing!!

You can fish in the Pacific Ocean, Humboldt Bay, several lagoons (fresh or brackish waters) or any of the six rivers. You know you are a local when you can name all six: Eel River, Klamath River, Mad River, Mattole River, Trinity River and the Van Duzen River.

Humboldt County is honestly one of the best areas for fishing in the world and the weather is great for fishing too. Where else can you do a little lazy bay fishing, or grab the white water excitement or sail out for a deep sea catch all in one day?

The Eel River, which flows right by Eel River Brewing Company, got it's name from natives along its shore who called it "Weott Lolla," meaning "many eels" or "river of plenty." It is mostly fished for steelhead from December to April. Fishermen need to wait after any significant rain for the Eel to clear up enough to fish again. Catch and release is always the rule on the Eel River.

The best time to surf fish is during high tide period (hour or two before and after).

It's easy to pick up a license at any sporting goods store or even the sports department in retail stores like K-Mart – but you don't have to have a license to fish off the pier at the end of W. Del Norte Street (behind Costco) in Eureka, because it was built with Federal Funds and is therefore exempt from the state licensing rules.
